The design process for the redevelopment of Mildura’s riverfront parklands is now underway and Council wants the wider public to get involved.
An online survey about the $13.3 million dollar project is now open, asking locals what they love about the riverfront and what riverfront activities and events would encourage them to use the area more.
Several information stalls will also be set up throughout Mildura over the next fortnight where people can find out more about the about the riverfront project and share their ideas.
Economic Development and Tourism Portfolio Councillor John Arnold says extensive consultation with groups who regularly use the riverfront and the project Community Reference Group has already revealed a number of key priorities for the project.
“Improved amenities, safety, accessibility, cultural interpretation and upgrades to existing facilities are some of the common themes that consultation has revealed so far,” Cr Arnold said.
“Opportunities for the wider public to offer their thoughts are now underway, to ensure everyone has a chance to be part of this important community project.”

All feedback received will be used to put together concept designs for the riverfront.
Council anticipates a draft concept for the parklands will be ready for the public to view around April 2013 and community consultation activities will continue as the design is further refined and finalised.

The Mildura Riverfront Precinct Redevelopment is a two stage project aimed at enhancing and activating Mildura’s riverfront setting. The aim is to create a unique space where residents and visitors can enjoy cultural, community and recreational opportunities and that has the potential to be a tourist destination in its own right. The project will act as a catalyst for redevelopment of the wider riverfront.
Stage 1 is led by Mildura Rural City Council and funded by the Victorian State Government ($7 Million), the Australian Federal Government ($4.8million) and Mildura Rural City Council $1.5 million). Stage 1 focuses on 18 hectares of existing parkland adjacent to the Murray River around the Nowingi Place, Ornamental Lakes and the Mildura Wharf on land that is currently owned or managed by Council.
Stage 2 is led by Regional Development Victoria (RDV)and is currently unfunded, however the state government has earmarked an initial $5 million to put towards it. It focuses on redeveloping about 9 hectares of rail corridor land running adjacent to Seventh Street between Madden Avenue and Walnut Avenue, including a crucial pedestrian link from Langtree Avenue to the riverfront. It also includes existing parklands between and including the Rowing Club and Powerhouse. A Business Case for Stage 2 to secure further funding has been prepared by Places Victoria on behalf of RDV. Council has endorsed this Business Case.
