The popular Walnut Park will be transformed into a centre of wellbeing later this month when it hosts a free Wellness Day on Tuesday, 24 October.

Organised as a follow-up to the recent installation of new exercise equipment in the park, this month’s Wellness Day will be a chance for residents to try out the new equipment while seeking expert advice from a range of health and fitness professionals who’ll be available at the event.

Councillor for Community Wellbeing and Services Ali Cupper encouraged the community to take advantage of the day, which will feature representatives from Sunraysia Community Health Services (SCHS), Lime Therapy, Alzheimer’s Australia Vic., Mildura Library and local Tai Chi and Nordic Walking exercise groups, along with Council’s Gentle Exercise group.

“We’ve already seen an increase in people getting active as a result of the new exercise equipment in the park, which was installed with residents’ help selecting the colour and location of the equipment, which is fantastic,” Cr Cupper said.

“This month’s Wellness Day is the next step, encouraging more residents to try the new equipment, while helping guide people of all ages in the best way to utilise it for their specific needs.

“We’ll also have experts on hand who will provide free physical assessments and advice on a range of health and wellness issues.”

Agencies and services on the day will include:

Lime Therapy

Will provide advice on the use of equipment at Walnut Park, tailoring exercise programs to suit individuals’ needs.

SCHS

Delivers the Life! program in Sunraysia, which is a free Victorian lifestyle modification program designed to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. A SCHS Life! program facilitator will be on hand to provide information and assessments.

Mildura Library

Staff will be on hand to provide information on the benefits of pedometers and how to use them, as well as Council’s Aged and Disability Living Longer Living Stronger program of gentle exercise.

Alzheimer’s Australia Vic.

Will provide information about the role physical exercise can play in reducing the risk of dementia, as well as the benefits for people already diagnosed with dementia.

Healthy Together Mildura

Staff will be on hand to offer free summer recipe books and food label reading cards for people to take with them.

This month’s Wellness Day will be held on Tuesday, 24 October from 9am till 12pm.
