Tracks and trails project points the way

Published on 19 May 2015

Residents and visitors alike will find navigating our local tracks and trails a little easier with new directional signage installed in Mildura, Member for Northern Victoria, Jaclyn Symes, and Mildura Rural City Council announced today.

Ms Symes and Recreation and Sport portfolio Councillor Mark Eckel announced the completion of the project which has seen six new signs installed. The signs include maps, recreational points of interest and facilities at key locations in and around the CBD, and are specifically targeted at walkers and cyclists.

The $35,000 project is funded by the Victorian Government ($20,000) and Mildura Rural City Council ($15,000).

Ms Symes said in addition to the signage, improvements had been made to some footpaths and intersections.

“The footpath and intersection improvements will increase safety for walkers and cyclists and preliminary plans have also been developed for a shared path along Benetook Avenue,” Ms Symes said.

“The Transport Investing in Regions initiative is a great example of how the Victorian Government is working with local councils and organisations to build stronger communities in regional and rural Victoria.”

The signs have been positioned in areas of high foot and bike traffic and as the Tracks and Trails strategy continues to be rolled out, more signs will be installed to compliment the project.

Councillor Mark Eckel said the project forms part of Council’s overall Tracks and Trails Strategy which encourages people to get out and get moving.

“We really want to see people out and about and using alternative transportation, such as bicycles, to commute around and between our towns,” Cr Eckel said.

“In particular the signs show people our great recreation reserves and areas where they can stretch their legs and be physically active.”
