Think twice before throwing out your Easter packaging

Waistlines may suffer slightly over Easter, but the environment doesn’t need to and Mildura Rural City Council is reminding locals to recycle packaging from their treats this long weekend.

The majority of packaging that is used on Easter treats like chocolate eggs and bunnies, can be recycled, including the aluminium wrapping.

“Our kerbside recycling collection service is the best place for aluminium wrapping and cardboard packaging off your Easter goodies,” Environmental Sustainability Portfolio Councillor Judi Harris said.

“For the best recycling outcome, aluminium should only be loosely scrunched so that it can be detected as an aluminium item (like a can) by the recycling sorting equipment.

“It’s essential to avoid leaving it flat or it may not be sorted properly”.

“Cardboard packing can also be placed into your kerbside recycling bin and will be used to create more cardboard items – perhaps for your Christmas presents.”

Residents can also choose products with less packaging and make some of their own treats like hot cross buns or chocolate bunnies to further reduce potential waste and save money too.

“Many manufacturers and retailers are now responding to consumer demand for less packaging, which is great for the environment,” Cr Harris said.

There are no changes to kerbside rubbish and recycling collection services over the Easter long weekend, so residents should put their bins out as normal.

The Mildura and Ouyen Landfills will be closed on Good Friday. The Mildura Landfill will be open from 8am to 3:45pm on Easter Saturday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday.

The Ouyen and Murrayville Landfills, Cullulleraine, Nangiloc, Walpeup, Underbool and Werrimull Transfer Stations will be open on Easter Sunday with normal operating hours. Ouyen Landfill will also be open on Easter Monday from 8am to 12pm.
