Sunraysia’s budding authors and wordsmiths will have a chance to learn what goes in to writing a novel as well as receive tips from a popular published author when crime/thriller writer Alex Hammond visits the region later this month.

Alex’s first novel, Blood Witness, was shortlisted for a Ned Kelly Award for crime writing, and was followed up by the successful The Unbroken Line, establishing him as a literary talent in the Australian crime/thriller genre.

Alex will visit the Merbein and Mildura libraries on Thursday, 26 April as part of the State Library of Victoria’s High Road to Reading program.

During his stay, Alex will provide two writing workshops – at 2.30pm at the Merbein Library and 4pm at the Mildura Library – followed by an open discussion evening at the Mildura Library at 7.30pm.

An Arts/Law degree graduate from the University of Melbourne with experience at several Melbourne law firms, the South African-born author shot to prominence with Blood Witness, which is described as a ‘dark powerful thriller’ set in the violent world of Melbourne’s criminal underbelly.

His work earned him the aforementioned Ned Kelly Award nomination, paving the way for his second novel.

Councillor for Arts and Culture Jason Modica said the High Road to Reading program would provide a chance for local residents to improve their writing as well as gain an insight into how Alex goes about his writing.

“This is a great opportunity for local writing enthusiasts to not only hone their craft by participating in a workshop with a published author, but learn more about Alex’s unique background and the inspiration behind his transition from Melbourne lawyer to crime writer,” Cr Modica said.

This month’s writing workshops are strictly limited to 20 people each, making bookings essential.

Bookings are also encouraged for the evening discussion session at Mildura Library, however last minute attendees are also welcome to attend.

For more information or to make a booking contact the Mildura Library on (03) 5018 8350 or visit www.mildura.vic.gov.au/library.
