Mildura Rural City Council has raised the issue of planning challenges relating to solar developments in the Mildura Older Irrigation Area (MOIA) at the highest levels of State Government today.

Mayor Mark Eckel discussed the issue directly with Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews during today’s Regional Cities Victoria (RCV) Growing Regional Victoria event in Melbourne.

The issue was among a raft of topics discussed at the event, which included Mayors and CEOs from the 10 RCV cities.

Cr Eckel said he received acknowledgement from the Premier of Sunraysia’s unique issues, with Premier Andrews offering “offline” discussions to address these concerns.

“I know Councillors are very concerned about the issue of solar developments in farming zones and are seeking clarification from a planning perspective,” he said.

“I outlined the issues raised during this week’s Council meeting and how these development applications raised challenges around the future of solar investment in our region.”

Cr Eckel said the Premier shared his awareness of the potential for significant growth in solar development in north west Victoria, and Mildura in particular.

“The Premier also reiterated an offer to meet with myself and the Victorian Planning Minister to examine options and future directions to assist us,” he said.

The Mayor described today’s discussions between the Mayors and CEOs of the 10 Regional Cities and Premier Andrews as “very positive and frank”.
