Riverfront redevelopment works to be expanded

Published on 19 May 2016

Mildura Rural City Council is proposing additional works be included as part of an expansion of Stage 1 of the Riverfront Redevelopment.  The expanded works will include repairs and beautification works to the crib wall.

According to Economic Development and Tourism portfolio Councillor John Arnold, the additional works will also ensure the refurbishment of the Mildura Rowing Club is completed all at once.

“Originally we had budgeted $1.75million to refurbish the Mildura Rowing Club, however this was set several years ago and since then, there has been some changes to the final concepts and designs,” Cr Arnold said. “The final plans include access for those with limited mobility to the new second floor with the installation of an elevator, decking along the front of building and full landscaping.

“We’ve also been able to factor in works to clean up and repair the crib wall which is something many in the community have been calling for.”

The initial engineering designs for the crib wall have a focus on repair and safety, while beautification works will complement the current designs along the riverfront.  Cr Arnold indicated there will be opportunities for the community to view the concept plans for enhancing the wall in the future.

“The proposed initial works will re-establish and stabilize the crib wall.”

While Council is already beginning planning for these works, the additional projects will be subject to confirmation through the 2016/2017 budget process negotiations.

Funding for the project has come primarily from the State and Federal governments.

The Federal Government has contributed $4.8million to the project, while the Victorian State Government has contributed the majority of the funds, with a $12million investment. Council’s contribution, should the additional works be approved as part of the 2016/2017 budget, will be $2.459million.

Work on the Rowing Club refurbishment began last month, with work on the crib wall scheduled to start in the new financial year (subject to budget approval).
