Remembrance wreath continues to grow

The Remembrance Wreath installation at Mildura Arts Centre is growing every day as locals and visitors alike take a moment to create a poppy and remember those who gave so much during times of conflict.

Two workshops held on 31 March and 1 April kicked off the project, with over 100 people creating more than 315 poppies.  Since then visitors to MAC have continued to add to the wreath and now almost 1000 poppies surround the Rio Vista Fountain.

“We’re thrilled by the response to the workshops and the ongoing interest from the community and tourists,” said Arts and Culture portfolio Councillor Jill Joslyn. “It’s a wonderfully easy way to pay tribute to our ANZAC heroes and to those who sacrificed so much.”

“We’re seeing people we’ve never seen before coming into the Arts Centre to have a go at making a poppy; we’ve had kids who went to the workshops bringing their whole families back with them to make some more.”

“Even some dads who attended the workshops with their kids are coming back to make some poppies on their own.”

Mildura Arts Centre will be open from 1pm on ANZAC Day and everyone is welcome to come along and create a poppy to remember of those lost to World War I.  Staff will also be on hand from 2pm to help anyone who is interested in making a submission to the Shrine of Remembrance’s Stories of Remembrance project.

“In addition to the Remembrance Wreath, Mildura Arts Centre staff will be collecting local ANZAC stories to be included in the Shrine of Rememberance travelling exhibition Australia Will Be There: Victorians in the First World War (1914–1919),” Cr Joslyn said.

“People can tell the stories of their ancestors and have them recorded with the Shrine for prosperity.”
