Regional Victoria’s best tennis players to converge on Mildura

Mildura has been successful in securing the rights to host the 2020 Inter-Regional Country Tennis Championships.
More than 250 tennis players and officials from across country Victoria will converge on Sunraysia for the event following a successful bid by Mildura Lawn Tennis Club.
The Championships is an annual teams and individual event held over three days at a regional venue each January.
The Mildura event will run from Friday, 3 January to Sunday, 5 January 2020 at the Mildura Lawn Tennis Club and draw players from across 11 Victorian country regions, providing a major boost to the region’s economy.
Mildura Rural City Council Mayor Mark Eckel, who also holds the Economic Development and Tourism portfolio, said Council supported Mildura Lawn Tennis Club’s successful bid to host the event through our New Event Sponsorship Funding program.
"We’re pleased to be involved in what is shaping up to be an exciting event, not just for the Mildura Lawn Tennis Club, but for our entire region,” Cr Eckel said.
“I congratulate the club for the work they put into their bid, which will once again showcase what are acknowledged as some of the best lawn tennis facilities in the country.
“Importantly, it will also showcase what our region has to offer, and with up to 280 players, officials and their families spending at least three days in our district – possibly longer if they arrive early and extend their stay during the popular holiday period - we’re expecting the economic benefit to our region to be in the vicinity of $600,000.”
The Inter-Regional Country Championships are open to club members affiliated with Tennis Victoria across all 11 country regions in seven different age groups, ranging from 12 Years to Open and Over 45.
“This will be a unique opportunity for our local players to compete against some of the best country players in Victoria,” Cr Eckel said.
