Rainbow flags to fly on Council buildings

Published on 11 May 2016

Mildura Rural City Council will fly four rainbow flags in recognition of International Day Against Homophobia next Tuesday.

The flag raising ceremony, which will take place at Council’s Madden Avenue Office aims to acknowledge the important contribution our Gay, Lesbian, Bi-sexual, Transgender Intersex and Queer (GLBTIQ) residents make to the very fabric of our community.

Community Development and Safety portfolio Councillor Ali Cupper is encouraging everyone to come along to the flag raising and show their support.

“International Day Against Homophobia is an important day for our community to show their support for our GLBTIQ community,” Cr Cupper said.

“Mildura is a progressive and dynamic region and we’ve certainly come a long way in terms of our attitudes towards true social inclusion, but there is still more we can do and learn.”

Educating people about the issues and discrimination faced by same sex, intersex and gender diverse Australians is an important part of Council’s GLBTIQ Inclusion Plan.

“Flying rainbow flags for one day of the year is a simple gesture. Hopefully, we as a Council and as a community, can build on these small gestures and showcase our community as the benchmark to all others as what a truly modern, Australian inclusive society really looks like,” Cr Cupper said.

The flag raising will take place at 11:30am on Tuesday 17 May at Council’s Madden Avenue office.

The flags will be flown at Council’s Madden Avenue and Ouyen offices, the Mildura Visitor Information and Booking Centre and the Fifteenth Street roundabout.
