Sunraysia residents will be able to meet popular author and illustrator Judy Horacek later this month when she launches the 1000 Books Before School program at Mildura Library.

Designed by the State Library of Victoria, the 1000 Books Before School program encourages children and parents to read together and enjoy books as a way to prepare them for schooling life.

Parents or care-givers can sign up to the program at any of Council’s libraries, paving the way for an introduction to reading that will benefit children throughout their future schooling.

Mildura Rural City Councillor for Arts and Culture Jason Modica encouraged residents to take advantage of the opportunity to not only meet one of Australia’s most prominent children’s authors and illustrators, but improve children’s literacy skills.

“This is a terrific program aimed at supporting early literacy in our community while encouraging parents and care-givers to read to children and share their reading experiences," Cr Modica said.

“It’s also a rare opportunity to meet children’s author Judy Horacek, who is a great supporter and promoter of children’s literacy.”

Judy’s books include the popular Where Is The Green Sheep?, These Are My Hands: These Are My Feet, and Make Cakes Not War, while a selection of her artwork has been acquired by the National Library of Australia as part of its collection.

Children who sign up to the program will receive a library bag, a book, two record sheets, a page of stickers and an information leaflet, with prizes presented throughout the program to encourage children to meet their reading targets.

Judy will launch the 1000 Books Before School program at the Mildura Library on Tuesday, 28 March at 10.30am. Morning tea will be provided after the launch.
