Sunraysia’s aspiring young future leaders have a chance to be heard at the highest levels of State Government through the 2017 YMCA Youth Parliament Program.

The program is designed to give young Victorians aged 16 to 25 an opportunity to raise a wide range of issues in the Victorian Parliament that are relevant to young peoples’ lives.

Six young people from Sunraysia are invited to be part of the 2017 YMCA Youth Parliament Program Mildura Team.

Members will receive training in public speaking and leadership at two residential camps at the YMCA’s Lake Dewar Lodge at Myrniong, near Bacchus Marsh, as they research issues they’re passionate about.

The first camp will be held on 26 – 28 May and include training in parliamentary etiquette and  public speaking, as well as allowing team members to get to know each other ahead of their time in parliament.

The program will culminate in a week of activities on 4 – 7 July, which will include a second camp at Lake Dewar Lodge and three days in the Legislative Chambers of Parliament House.

Team members will also receive training in Mildura from an experienced mentor as they research and develop a Bill, which they’ll debate in the Victorian Parliament during their three days at Parliament House.

Mildura Rural City Councillor for Community Wellbeing and Services Ali Cupper said the YMCA Youth Parliament Program provides a raft of benefits and unique opportunities for the district’s young people.

“The program provides a great personal and professional development opportunity, while also allowing team members to make a real difference, as the Bills they develop will be handed to the relevant Ministers, providing an insight into issues important to young Victorians,” Cr Cupper said.

The YMCA Victorian Youth Parliament Program is funded by Mildura Rural City Council and the YMCA. Participation is free to successful applicants.

The Mildura team will be selected from expressions of interest, which must be submitted to Mildura Rural City Council by 5pm next Thursday, 30 March.
