Mildura residents will embrace the 2018 Commonwealth Games spirit early next year as one of the locations included in the Gold Coast 2018 Queen’s Baton Relay.

The Queen’s Baton will travel a route through Mildura’s central business district on Saturday, 17 February next year as part of the longest relay journey in history. The exact route through Mildura is yet to be confirmed.

The Queen’s Baton Relay (QBR) takes a message from her Majesty The Queen through the Commonwealth to the Opening Ceremony of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018) on 4 April.

A Commonwealth Games tradition, the QBR celebrates the Commonwealth’s diversity, inspires community pride and excites people about the world-class festival of sport and culture to come.

The Baton will travel 230,000 kilometres in 388 days.

Sunraysia residents have a unique opportunity to be part of the Relay through a Community Batonbearer Nomination Program, which will be launched tomorrow.

It will allow local residents to share the dream and carry the spirit of the ‘Games, embracing the diversity and values of the Commonwealth.

Mildura Rural City Council Mayor Glenn Milne encouraged residents to get involved in the Relay nomination program.

“The Queen’s Baton Relay is a celebration of Commonwealth Games values, with sport, community, diversity and peace at the heart of a powerful movement,” Cr Milne said.

“And the fact the Baton will pass through our region represents a fantastic opportunity to be part of this very special sporting event that will be talked about for decades to come.”

Once the Baton arrives at the Opening Ceremony on 4 April next year, the Queen’s message will be removed from the Baton and read aloud to officially open the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Full details of the Batonbearer Nomination program will be available on the Mildura Rural Council website tomorrow at www.mildura.vic.gov.au.

Nominations close at 11.59 on 15 May, 2017.
