Mildura Pride Project community film screening

Published on 07 October 2015

Mildura Rural City Council’s Mildura Pride Project is hosting a screening of the Australian documentary film Gayby Baby vision as part of its social inclusion campaign aimed specifically at our gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, transgender, intersex and queer residents.

The Gay, Lesbian, Bi-sexual, Transgender, Intersex and Queer (GLBTIQ) Inclusion Plan is being developed to ensure this sometimes isolated group of residents, have a voice in our region.

Community Development and Safety portfolio Councillor Ali Cupper said the screening of Gayby Baby is a great way to get people talking about GLBTIQ families.

“The movie looks at four typical Australian kids – whose parents happen to be gay,” Cr Cupper explained.  “It examines the issue of marriage equality, the challenges and opportunities these children sometimes face and the changing way we as a community view the term “family”.

“It also examines the controversial idea that kids living as a part of a “non-traditional” family are at greater risk of physical abuse or of developing mental health issues.”

The screening of the movie is a self-funded project, with a minimum of 50 tickets needing to be pre-sold before the event will go ahead.

“Tickets are $20 and can be purchased online,” Cr Cupper said.  “The screening is scheduled for 6:30pm on Wednesday 28 October but we need to have confirmed minimum numbers by Monday 19 October for the event to go ahead.”

Bookings can be made online at www.tugg.com/events/56125

As part of the GLBTIQ Inclusion Plan, the community reference group has also set up the Mildura Pride Facebook page as a place people can go to have open and frank conversations about what makes a community feel safe and inclusive.
