Mildura Rural City Council’s Mildura Library will be closed from Saturday 23 July until Sunday 14 August for renovations.

The three week closure will see new carpet laid throughout the facility, a new customer service desk installed and the floor plan updated to allow for increased public space.

The renovations are being funded through the Victorian Government’s Living Libraries program and by the Mildura Rural City Council and are the first major updates to the Mildura library since it opened more than 19 years ago.

Arts and Culture portfolio Councillor Jill Joslyn said a number of measures were being put in place to support library users during this period.

“The library team have put in place a very detailed plan to enable library users to continue to have access to resources and to make sure they aren’t penalised for not returning items on time,” Cr Joslyn said.

Prior to the closure period customers will be able to borrow up to 20 items and loan periods will be extended, with renewals also able to be made over the phone or online.  Library staff will also be working from the Mildura Visitor Information and Booking Centre and will be available to help people looking to return items or collect resources on hold.

“It’s also a great opportunity for people to visit some of our other great libraries,” Cr Joslyn said.  “Libraries in Merbein, Red Cliffs and Irymple are all part of the Council’s library service and memberships are interchangeable at any of the branches.

“It’s going to be a massive job to move over 35,000 resources and all the furniture and then put them back once the work is complete.  But it will definitely be worth it.”
