This Wednesday will mark 20 years of The Alfred Deakin Centre serving as a central point for library services, visitor information and a host of major events over the past two decades.

On 28 June, 20 years ago, the Mildura Library, Visitor Information Centre, café and Benetook Room were centrally located under the one roof in Deakin Avenue and opened to the public.

The move to centralise these facilities saw the Mildura Library relocated from its former location at the Carnegie Centre, and the Visitor Information Centre from the CBD to its current location.

They’ve since served tens of thousands of local residents and visitors as well as The Alfred Deakin Centre hosting a diverse range of events, meetings and presentations through both the Benetook Room and nearby café.

These works formed the first stage of this major, regional, multipurpose community hub, with the second subsequent stage to include the Mildura Waves Aquatic and Leisure Centre, which opened in 2000.

To mark two decades of The Alfred Deakin Centre serving the community, the Mildura Library will celebrate all week, featuring birthday-themed storytimes.

There will also be a special afternoon tea on Wednesday at 3pm, where Mayor Glenn Milne will cut a birthday cake to mark the occasion.

Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Arts and Culture Jason Modica said the move to The Alfred Deakin Centre 20 years ago provided much needed room for the library to expand.

"The result of relocating to The Alfred Deakin Centre is obvious to anyone who uses our modern, well equipped library,” Cr Modica said.

“It’s spacious, well laid out, and importantly, allows for a diverse range of services and facilities for everyone in our community from children through the elderly and everyone in between.”
