Mildura Eco Village to open its doors for Sustainable House Day

Published on 14 September 2017

What better way to celebrate Sustainable House Day than seeing first-hand examples of ways Sunraysia residents can live more sustainably at Mildura Eco Village this Sunday.

An open day at Mildura Eco Village will be held from 1pm to 4pm, providing a chance for the community to learn more about the facilities on offer and the community groups that use them.

The open day will also double as a chance to unveil a commemorative tree sculpture celebrating the dedicated people who’ve contributed to the development of Mildura Eco Village since its inception seven years ago.

Sustainable House Day has now been running for 15 years and is a national event aimed at showcasing homes and features that are environmentally friendly, cheap to run and comfortable to live in.

All Mildura Eco Village facilities will be open to mark the day, including the innovative Solar Distillation unit and Eco House and Education Centre, while community garden beds will also be available for lease.

Greening Mildura will also be on hand to offer information on the seed bomb site and tea tree project display.

There will be plenty to occupy children as well, with activities provided by the Mulberry Tree Play Group.

And for those keen for a bite to eat while inspecting the latest in sustainable living, the Slow Food Youth Network will be cooking pizza in the village’s on-site pizza oven.

Mildura Food Swap will also be at the open day, providing a chance for people to drop off or take away home-grown produce.

Other features of the open day will include sales of plants, herbs and lettuce, a door raffle and a free ‘guess the pumpkin weight’ to win a pumpkin.

Plants/herbs and lettuce will also be available to purchase during the event.

Councillor for Environmental Sustainability Anthony Cirillo urged Sunraysia residents to take advantage of the event.

“This is a great opportunity to not only learn more about the broad range of initiatives, projects and technologies to help us live more sustainably, but also a chance to take a tour of our Mildura Eco Village to learn more about what this fantastic facility has to offer our community,” Cr Cirillo said.

“It’s also a great chance to meet like-minded people who have a passion for sustainable and healthy living.”
