This weekend’s Mildura Eco Village Open Day is the perfect way to learn more about the latest sustainable living and innovative environmental projects under way in our region.

Mildura Eco Village is an area for the community to come together to share ideas about sustainable and healthy living and is home to a host of creative projects, ultimately aimed at having a positive and lasting influence on community attitudes.

All of the Village’s facilities will be open as part of the event, which runs from 3pm to 6.30pm this Sunday, 26 March.

They include the Solar Distillation, Eco House and Education Centre, allowing the community to see first-hand the positive impacts these projects can have on the region, and the environment.

There will also be a trash-to-art acquisition display and recycled art competition by local school students.

Residents will also be able to inspect succulents grown through the Christie Centre’s new enterprise, GrowAbility, which will be available for purchase, while Greening Mildura will showcase its new projects.

The regular Mildura Food Swap, which sees the community able to swap surplus vegetables, will also operate on the day.

Other features will include a display in the Eco House by Sunraysia Community Health Services’ Refugee Kitchen Garden Group. This group of mostly single Afghan men grow their own produce in the Community Garden and use it to prepare healthy meals in the Eco House.

People keen to get involved will be able to hire community garden beds.

The region’s younger residents will have plenty to do as well, with children’s activities provided by the Mulberry Tree Play Group, including a mock-up playgroup session and face-painting.

Mildura Rural City Councillor for Environmental Sustainability Anthony Cirillo encouraged Sunraysia residents to take advantage of this weekend’s open day.

“There is so much happening in our region at the moment in terms of projects and initiatives aimed at creating a more sustainable future,” Cr Cirillo said.

“And a lot of this work can been seen at Mildura Eco Village, as well as a host of information to help educate residents on ways they can implement more sustainable practices in their everyday lives.”
