It’s Game On for Summer Reading Club during school holidays
Published on 07 December 2017
What better way for our younger residents to keep cool this summer than grabbing a great book and immersing yourself in the wonderful world of reading as part of our Summer Reading Club.
The Summer Reading Club operates from Council’s Library Service from now until 31 January and is open to young people aged 0 to 18.
The program is designed to develop literacy skills in children and young people and is now in its seventh year.
Last year’s program proved a resounding success, with Sunraysia readers among 55,000 people who read more than 450,000 books across the country.
Children and young people who enter will receive a kit with a range of activities to complete, with encouragement to read during the holiday period.
Every 10 books a child reads are recorded in a reading log, and each completed log can be used as an entry in a prize draw, meaning the more books participants read the more chance they have of winning.
Councillor for Arts and Culture Jason Modica said the program was a fun and interesting way for younger residents to either discover reading, or further develop their reading skills.
“Reading is something that will benefit children for the rest of their lives, no matter what career path they choose, and this is the perfect way to encourage them to read more,” Cr Modica said.
“The theme for his year’s national program is Game On, providing the opportunity to explore sports, games and technology.
“There are so many books to choose from, covering so many themes, topics and age levels that there is sure to be something to read for everyone and I’d encourage children to read age-appropriate books to challenge their reading skills, or re-read old favourites.”
This year’s Summer Reading Club will culminate in talks by best-selling children and young fiction author Jack Heath at the Ouyen, Merbein, Red Cliffs and Mildura Libraries on January 24 and 25. Bookings are essential for these talks and will be publicised once they open.
Registration for the Summer Reading Club is free and can be made by parents at any of Council’s libraries. Registrations can also be made online through the Summer Reading Club website at www.summerreadingclub.org.au.
