The birdlife of our region will be the centre of attention at Mildura Arts Centre next Thursday as part of the latest exhibition by local artist Paul Oswin.

A prolific artist who exhibits regularly, Paul’s Birds of the Mallee is a stunning collection of paintings mainly depicting Mallee birdlife.

On display in the Bolte Gallery until 5 February, the exhibition reflects both the artist’s time studying and working in the Mallee, as well as the diverse range of styles and techniques he’s known for.

Paul now works from his home studio in Kerang and has a Bachelor of Fine Art from Mildura’s La Trobe University and a Diploma of Education from La Trobe University’s Bendigo campus.

Paul has also been keen to pass on his artistic knowledge, balancing his art practice with a career as a visual arts teacher.

While Birds of the Mallee is based around paintings, Paul is also well known for his print-making, drawing and digital art.

Mildura Rural City Councillor for Arts and Culture, Deputy Mayor Jason Modica, said it was exciting to see the Mallee reflected in Paul’s artwork.

“It’s exciting to see in this exhibition where Paul’s interest in the plants, animals and landscapes of the Mallee has significantly influenced his artwork,” Cr Modica said.

“His use of expressive marks and bold colours accurately captures the birds’ physical likeness, character and impression of its environment.

“Birds of the Mallee provides an opportunity for locals and visitors to see up close the unique and characterful beauty of our region.”
