The Langtree Mall is set to get a makeover. Using $5,000 and the power of people, the central public precinct will be transformed in just seven days this June. And the community is invited to make it happen.

Anyone can get involved in the makeover – they just have to be willing to pitch in and passionate about making the Mall a more appealing public place where people want to spend time.

Mayor Glenn Milne said experienced placemaker David Engwicht would help locals realise their vision for the Mall.

“There have been significant investments in the Langtree Mall in recent years, and while there is some great infrastructure in place, the Mall still has potential to be even better,” Cr Milne said.

“The Langtree Mall 7 Day Makeover is a chance for everyone to work together to improve it.”

Having successfully staged various 7 Day Makeovers in Australian and New Zealand locations over the years, David Engwicht, from Creative Communities, has helped towns transform tired, underused and unappreciated public spaces in to vibrant community hubs.

“The secret to the success of the 7 Day Makeover is that it’s driven by the public and doesn't get bogged down in endless meetings and processes,” David said.

“Anyone who wants to be involved, regardless of their age, background, position or profession, can be part of this, so long as they’re willing to get involved and want to make the Mall a better place.”

While major infrastructure changes and introducing traffic in to the Langtree Mall is not an option, David said other makeovers in Australia and New Zealand had achieved outstanding results for public spaces.

“The very first makeover was in Paihia, New Zealand and transformed a small town square.  So many people got involved and it was such a success that it provided momentum for more than 20 more projects.”

The Langtree Mall 7 Day Makeover will take place from June 1 to 7. An information night to learn more about the process and get involved will be held in the Benetook Room at Mildura’s Alfred Deakin Centre, on the corner of Deakin Avenue and Twelfth Street, Mildura on Tuesday 14 April.
