More than 400 people have had input into Mildura Rural City Council’s  2016 – 2020 Arts, Culture and Heritage Strategy to date, with the final document now out for the last round of public consultation.

The important strategic document identifies the key opportunities and challenges for our community in terms of continuing to grow and expand arts and cultural activities in our region, as well as protecting our heritage.

Arts and Culture portfolio Councillor Jill Joslyn said the strategy particularly focuses on increasing opportunities for participation in a range of activities including both passive and active participation.

“The strategy looks at ways we can engage people in all sorts of traditional and non-traditional artistic and cultural activities,” Cr Joslyn said.  “How do we get people to come and visit an exhibition, to see a show or come to a festival?  Or how do we get people to become more involved by showing their art work, taking up acting or singing or helping to run a festival or event?

“It’s not just about what shows to put on, but what does participation actually look like and how does participation enrich the lives of the wider community."

Joanne Farrell, Chair of Mildura Arts and Culture Advisory Committee has welcomed the strategy and encourages everyone to have a look at the plans for the next five years.

“Arts, Culture and heritage is an integral part of our municipality. It needs to be accessible and relevant to all of the community. This Strategy not only sets the agenda for the future but also documents how much that has already been achieved in the recent past. The Mildura Arts and Culture Advisory Committee are proud to have been involved in the process of its development. It will ensure that Arts, Culture and heritage is pursued to the highest level for our region.”

With the strategy now out for public discussion, people have been invited to come along and reflect on whether they feel they are represented in the strategy and whether or not they agree with the direction Council is taking.

Three drop-in discussion sessions will be held on in the Mildura Arts Centre Foyer on:

  • Wednesday 6 July         5:30pm to 7:30pm
  • Sunday 10 July              11am to 2pm
  • Monday 18 July              10am to 2pm

One-on-one discussions with the Arts & Culture Development Manager and written submissions are also being encouraged.
