Sunraysia residents are invited to do their part to help beautify and improve the natural amenity of the Mildura South Wetlands by rolling up their sleeves and planting trees ahead of National Tree Day later this year.

Mildura Rural City Council will host the tree planting day on Sunday, 30 April, providing a chance for residents to help plant hundreds of trees around the Ontario Avenue end of the Dunning Wetlands area.

Councillor for Environmental Sustainability Anthony Cirillo encouraged residents, particularly those who live in the Mildura South Wetlands area, to get involved.

“This is a great initiative that will provide numerous benefits to the wetlands and surrounding area,” Cr Cirillo said.

“It’s an important area for several reasons. It serves as a habitat for plants and animals, increasing biodiversity, but will also help beautify the area once the trees are planted and mature.”

While National Tree Day actually falls in July, Council has made the decision to celebrate earlier, providing a chance for the newly-planted trees to get well-established ahead of the warmer summer months later this year.

Council will provide ‘tree planters’ with everything they need on the day – gloves, tools, watering cans and buckets, drinking water, refreshments and a barbecue lunch. All people need to do is ensure they wear appropriate clothing, including sturdy shoes and long pants.

This month’s tree planting day will start from 11am and include a barbecue lunch at midday.
