Mildura Rural City Council is about to start work on a major reconstruction of one of the central business district’s busiest roads.

An 80-metre section of Eighth Street between Madden and Orange Avenues will be reconstructed over the coming two months to address the ongoing and worsening condition of the road.

The works will involve the replacement of the road pavement, drainage infrastructure, kerb and channel, and asphalt resurfacing.

Councillor for Infrastructure and Transport Greg Brown said the works were designed to improve safety for both road users and pedestrians, as well as curb maintenance costs in the long-term due to the increasing need to undertake minor repairs.

“Obviously road safety is our priority at any time when we look at our road network, particularly in such an important and busy area of our CBD,” Cr Brown said.

“We also have a responsibility to our rate payers to save costs wherever possible, and while these are certainly major works, in the longer term this is a far better solution from a financial perspective than the cost of continually patching up the road surface.”

The 80-metre section of Eighth Street between Madden Avenue and Orange Avenue will need to be closed to traffic for the duration of the works, however the intersections at either end will remain open, as will all businesses along this strip.

Council recognises this is an inconvenience for nearby businesses, which is why we’ll be making every effort to ensure pedestrian access is maintained as much as possible.

With such major reconstruction works, these disruptions are unavoidable, and Council is continuing to work with nearby businesses to help them through the coming two months, ensuring this project is completed well before the busy Christmas holiday period.

Residents are encouraged to continue supporting these businesses.

Traffic management will be in place alerting motorists to changed traffic conditions. Drivers are urged to be patient and adhere to road signage.

Work is expected to start this Monday, 24 September.
