Cureton Avenue facelift

Published on 14 March 2017

The median strip that curves along Cureton Avenue between the Sturt Highway and Seventh Street will be given a facelift, with Mildura Rural City Council starting work to clean up and beautify the entrance to Mildura from Buronga this week.

The current plantings on the median strip, which includes a number of trees, will be stripped back and completely replanted.

Mildura Rural City Councillor for Environmental Sustainability Anthony Cirillo said many of the trees planted in the nature strip had been damaged over the years and are not in great condition.

“Removing trees is always a last resort. This stretch of Cureton Avenue is part of the gateway to Mildura and can be seen as you come over the bridge so it’s important we make it look as welcoming as possible,” Cr Cirillo said.

“The project includes tree replacement with 40 established Lemon Scented Gums to go back into the median strip.  We will also be putting in two new garden beds at either end of Cureton Avenue, adding water-saving mulch and updating the irrigation system.”

The Lemon Scented Gums have been selected as they grow quite straight and tall and don’t have a wide canopy, meaning high vehicles that use the street will have a better clearance.

“We are planting trees that are already two to three metres tall, which means the streetscape will look established straight away,” Cr Cirillo said.

In addition to these works, Parks and Gardens staff are also redesigning the plantings in the Sturt Highway and Seventh Street roundabout and working with residents and developers at the Marina to ensure it is kept looking neat and tidy.

Work on the Cureton Avenue median strip will start on Thursday 16 March, with traffic management in place for approximately eight days.
