Mildura Rural City Council will take its strong support for White Ribbon Australia to the streets of Adelaide this weekend when its team takes part in the City-Bay Fun Run under the White Ribbon banner.

This will be the second year a group of Council staff participate in the event in an effort to raise funds and awareness about preventing violence against women. Last year’s team raised more than $4,000 for White Ribbon Australia and they hope to raise even more this year.

A team of 14 people from right across Council will head to Adelaide this weekend and participate in either the 6km or 12km run, or a 3km or 6km walk. They have been training regularly week in preparation for the event, which will be held this Sunday, 16 September.

Council’s White Ribbon Committee Chair and General Manager Development, Mandy Whelan will be running this weekend and said the team’s entry was one of numerous White Ribbon Australia initiatives Council undertakes each year.

“This is another way we can show our support, and importantly, raise awareness about White Ribbon on a much larger scale, and it’s fantastic to see Council staff embracing our support for White Ribbon in this way,” Ms Whelan said.

“White Ribbon’s ultimate aim is to reduce incidents of violence against women through continually raising awareness and we feel this is a great way to do that.”

Since forming earlier this year, Council’s White Ribbon Run team has already raised more than $1,500 for White Ribbon Australia and is encouraging the community to continue supporting the team ahead of the event. To donate visit https://citybay2018.everydayhero.com/au/MRCCWhiteRibbonTeam

The City-Bay Fun Run started more than 40 years ago and is one of the biggest fun runs in Australia, in the past attracting more than 40,000 participants. This year’s event will take participants from the centre of Adelaide to Glenelg.

Individual team members from the Council team will cover their own entry fees, travel and accommodation costs for the event and have been training in their own time, outside of working hours.
