Fifty-six local event organisers and arts, community, recreation and sporting groups will be presented with more than half a million dollars this afternoon as part of Mildura Rural City Council’s Grant Program.

In total, $518,797 will be presented to 56 recipients tonight at the Mildura Arts Centre foyer at 5pm.

Mildura Mayor Glenn Milne said the grant program had a proven record of ensuring local groups, organisations and organisers - the majority of which were volunteer-run – could continue their work, which ultimately benefitted the wider community.

“Our hard-working volunteer groups serve a vital role in our community, including offering essential services, recreation, events and other opportunities,” Cr Milne said.

Councillor for Economic Development and Tourism Mark Eckel said ensuring the region’s events and recreation facilities – both large and small – had a stable future was vitally important.

“The diverse range of events in our region, largely created and run by volunteers, serve an important role from a tourism and economic development perspective,” Cr Eckel said.

“By supporting these events through our grants program, as well as the numerous recreation facilities and groups in our area, we are contributing to the broader economic development of our region.”

Councillor for Community Development Min Poole said the more than $320,000 funding injection for community partnerships in the region would also have a broad impact.

“These grants are a chance for Council to help these organisations continue their work, and in some cases help them survive financially. In a way, it’s us giving back to these groups for their hard work and initiative,” Cr Poole said.

“It’s fantastic to see that once again we have a wide range of groups that have successfully applied for this latest round of funding.”

Councillor for Arts and Culture Jason Modica congratulated the six successful recipients in this latest round of Arts Development Grants, which represented a broad range of projects.

“From headspace Mildura’s Therapeutic Drumming project through to the Mildura Print Triennial’s Mungo Prints, it’s great to see the creativity displayed by our community,” Cr Modica said.

“By supporting these and many other groups through our grants program, we are helping to ensure financial factors aren’t obstacles to creativity in our region.”

The funding recipients were approved by Councillors at the last two Ordinary Council
