Corroboree to celebrate NAIDOC Week in Mildura

Mildura Rural City Council is encouraging Sunraysia residents, groups and businesses to be part of NAIDOC Week celebrations in a very special way this year with a traditional Corroboree on Mildura’s riverfront.

NAIDOC Week is a national event held in July each year to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

It does this through a raft of different events and activities that the community is encouraged to participate in.

Council is working with the Aboriginal Action Committee to put on a special event to mark NAIDOC Week this year in the form of a Corroboree.

A Corroboree is a traditional Aboriginal dance ceremony which brings people together and is seen as the ideal way to celebrate the region’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.

The event, to be held on Sunday, 2 July at Jaycee Park, will include cultural workshops, stalls, entertainment and food, which local residents and groups are invited to help provide as a way of sharing the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture with the broader community.

Councillor for Community Wellbeing and Services Ali Cupper encouraged local residents, community groups and organisations to be part of the event.

“Our region is steeped in a long and rich Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage that must not only be acknowledged, but celebrated each year through events such as NAIDOC Week,” Cr Cupper said.

“A Corroboree on the banks of one of our most valuable and oldest traditional assets – the Murray River - is the perfect way to celebrate NAIDOC Week while sharing the beautiful culture of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander residents.”

Cr Cupper said the event would also form an important part of Council’s ongoing commitment to reconciliation through its Reconciliation Action Plan.

Applications are now open for community members, groups and organisations to be part of the event through cultural workshops, stalls, food provision and entertainment.

Application forms are available at www.mildura.vic.gov.au/Community/NAIDOC-Week-2017. Forms must be returned to Council before Friday, 12 May.
