Mildura Rural City Council is reminding Easter campers to check they’re in a designated camping area before they pitch a tent for the holidays.

Environmental Sustainability portfolio Councillor Judi Harris said there are sites set aside for recreational use during the day and not for camping overnight.

“The section of the Murray River Reserve between Cowra Avenue in Mildura and Chaffey Landing (Blandowski Walk) at Merbein is designated as a day-use area,” Cr Harris explained. “Reserves such as River Boulevard, Chaffey Bend, Johnsons Bend and Ranfurly Way are all within this area and are great places for people to come enjoy a day of picnicking, fishing and water activities.

“We want everyone to have access to the riverfront over Easter so it’s important campers set up in appropriate places.”

While Council is encouraging everyone to spend some time on the river and in our natural environment over the holidays, they are also reminding people to treat these areas with respect.

“Stick to the tracks, take your rubbish with you when you leave and look after the infrastructure we have in place for you,” urged Cr Harris.  “Damage to the environment, to the roads and tracks and to the designated parking areas is costly and frustrating for Council.

“We will have Council staff visiting the day-use areas over the Easter break just to check the areas are being kept tidy and that visitors are utilising the area appropriately.

“This is important not just for people travelling in by car, but also those in boats or holidaying on houseboats.  Please take care when mooring and make sure you leave the bank as you found it.”

Council is also reminding river users they can pick up a River and Wetland Recreational Kit from Mildura Tourist and Visitor Information Centre before heading out into our great parks and reserves.  The free kit includes information about local flora and fauna as well as helpful tips on how to enjoy our rivers and wetlands responsibly.

“It’s looking like fabulous weather for Easter and for spending time outside,” Cr Harris said. “Let’s make sure the river environment is looking just as fabulous when we all head home again.”
