Autumn program a feast for lovers of arts, music and performance

Published on 17 March 2015

Mildura Arts Centre has released its 2015 Autumn Program, with a wide variety of performances and exhibitions, many bringing shows usually reserved for metropolitan audiences to the regions.

One such performance will see Rachel Beck and David Hobson, two of the Australia’s biggest names in musical theatre, head to MAC this May with their new production, Both Sides.

Showcasing yet another great opportunity for regional audiences to experience nationally acclaimed performers, Both Sides will feature music from Les Misérables, My Fair Lady, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The Sound of Music, Oliver! and West Side Story.

“It’s wonderful to have Rachael Beck and David Hobson gracing our stage,” Arts and Culture portfolio Councillor Jill Joslyn said.  “Australian audiences have watched both David’s and Rachael’s careers over many years on television, the theatre and as concert performers”.

Rachael is one of Australia’s most in-demand performers, well known as Belle opposite Hugh Jackman in Beauty and the Beast, as Truly Scrumptious in the Australian tour of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and also on the television program Home and Away.

Australian tenor and composer David Hobson is an acclaimed operatic, concert and stage performers.  David starred as Rodolfo in La Boheme directed by Baz Luhrmann and has gone on to have an amazingly varied career as a classical performer, recording artist, music theatre leading man and a frequent television performer on shows like Carols By Candlelight, Spicks and Specks and Dancing With the Stars.

“And of course we have Paavali Jumppanen coming to MAC on Friday 22 May as part of the Melbourne Recital Centre partnership which is very exciting,” Cr Joslyn said.

Other performances include the return of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow in April and the family fun of The Lisities this Thursday 19 March.

And while the theatre program is looking great, the galleries will also provide a host of inspiring exhibitions.

The WWI and ANZAC Day Centenary Commemorative Exhibitions 2015 are on show now, and in May two exhibitions Kaleidoscope and The Joyce McGrath Donation will feature works from MAC’s own collection.

“The staff at MAC are always being asked to put more of our permanent collection on display,” Cr Joslyn said.  “On 14 May we will opening the The Joyce McGrath Donation exhibition.  Artist and member of the Victorian Artists Society Joyce McGrath OAM was born in Red Cliffs in 1925.  This exhibition features her generous donation of thirty artworks to MAC Collection.”

The Joyce McGrath Donation is a rare opportunity to see a selection of paintings by the artists Archibald Douglas Colquhoun, Shirley Bourne, Rex Bramleigh, Amalie Colquhoun, Alan Martin, Ray Hewitt, Ron Crawford, Dorothy Whitehead, Peter Glass, Judith Wills, Percy Leason, Henry Griffiths and Max Meldrum.
