Melbourne Recital Centre in association with Mildura Arts Centre present one of Australia’s leading pianists Piers Lane for one performance only on Saturday 27 October at 7.30pm.

Piers Lane is an engaging and highly versatile performer, equally at home in solo, chamber and concerto repertoire.

Recent highlights include a performance of Busoni’s mighty piano concerto at Carnegie Hall, premieres of Carl Vine’s second Piano Concerto, written for Piers, with the Sydney Symphony and the London Philharmonic, and several sold-out solo recitals at Wigmore Hall in London

For the piano recital at Mildura Arts Centre, Piers Lane has created a program all about connections: Chopin idolised Bach and in turn inspired the Russians.

The first half pieces are without exception probing and moving, mirroring the forms used in Tchaikovsky’s rarely-heard work. Stravinsky’s colourful Petrouchka movements then bring the recital to a dazzling climax.

This emotive performance will appeal to both classical music enthusiasts and emerging and established pianists.

In 2018, Mildura Arts Centre celebrates owning a Steinway & Sons Grand Piano, which is a significant milestone for the community, as well as the ongoing partnership of Mildura Arts Centre and Melbourne Recital Centre.

It also marks Mildura’s association with Piers Lane, as the Steinway was specifically selected for Mildura Arts Centre by the pianist

Mildura Rural City Councillor for Arts and Culture Jason Modica said the piano recital performance highlighted the benefits of having a Steinway.

“Having a Steinway at Mildura Arts Centre attracts high-calibre musicians to the region, and Piers Lane is no exception,” Cr Modica said.

“In 2012, he was made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for distinguished services to the arts as pianist, mentor and organiser.

“Mildura Arts Centre’s valuable partnership with Melbourne Recital Centre creates continuous opportunities for our community to see world-leading classical musicians, and we are particularly excited Piers Lane is performing on the Steinway he chose specifically for Mildura Arts Centre all those years ago.”

Supported by the Victorian Government through Creative Victoria, and Dr Geraldine Lazarus and Greig Gailey.
