A message from the Mayor - Merry Christmas

Published on 21 December 2015

Christmas is a special time of year when families gather together, many travelling long distances to return home, to exchange gifts, enjoy specially prepared meals and delight in this once a year celebration.

Christmas is an important part of our culture, a celebration of the birth of Jesus and in simple terms, the declaration of peace and goodwill to all mankind, an important basic principal for us all.

While the majority in our community will celebrate with gifts, food and friendship, there are many in our community who will struggle to enjoy the same comforts or just won’t be able to do so at all.  Around us there will also be many people who have lost loved ones during the year and will be facing a difficult Christmas without them for the first time.

In the spirit of peace and goodwill, I ask everyone to think about how you have been blessed during the year and take some time to provide a little joy for those who maybe haven’t been so lucky.  Let’s make this Christmas a time to not only enjoy ourselves but make the effort to also bring some happiness to others around us.

There are many ways we can make a difference, large or small, to those around us who for one reason or another are facing a less than merry Christmas. There are many organisations raising funds and collecting gifts to be distributed to those in need and if you are able, please consider giving to those organisations.

We can also make a difference by looking closer to home – to our friends, neighbours and those around us in our daily life.

Why not consider sharing your Christmas celebrations?  Invite someone who has nowhere to go to join with you to celebrate, buy a gift for a neighbour in need or offer to assist someone who might need support.  Sometimes just dropping by with a plate of biscuits and a sympathetic ear is all it takes to brighten someone’s day.

It doesn't need to cost much and might only require a small effort, but it can make a huge difference to an individual or a family.

The Mildura region is a fantastic place to live, we have some of the best people on the planet living here. Let's show our wonderful Christmas spirit and let it be a very Merry Christmas for all.
