A message from our CEO - In memory of Mr Roy Burr OAM

Published on 15 July 2016

It is with great sadness we acknowledge the passing of the City of Mildura’s former Mayor and longest serving Councillor Mr Albert "Roy" Burr OAM.

Roy was the epitome of what it means to be a gentleman and a leader, quietly working behind the scenes to lay the foundations for so many of our community’s greatest achievements.

During his time serving our community as Mayor and as a Councillor, Roy’s unwavering commitment to seeing everyone treated with dignity, respect and kindness is something that still resonates today through many of our internal policies, our social inclusion commitments and through our vision for our region.

Roy was not only a leader locally, he was also a leader in the Local Government industry.  He took on a role with the Municipal Association of Victoria in 1986 and was elected President in 1994, spearheading Local Government advocacy on many issues across Victoria and around the country.

In 1999, Council conferred on Roy the title of Freeman of the City, the highest honour a Council can award one of its residents.

While his time at Council was only a small part of his extraordinary life, we can see from his memos and letters that he was very proud of his time serving our community and we will forever be grateful to him for this commitment.

On behalf of all staff and Councillors, we offer our heartfelt condolences to Roy’s family and friends at this very sad time.
