Footpaths & Roads

Council maintains a road network of more than 5,000 kilometres – including 1000km of sealed roads and 4,200km of unsealed roads, as well as some 370km of footpaths and walking tracks. Maintenance works are carried out to ensure all infrastructure and assets are safe for public use. Council also invests significant funds into major infrastructure repair and upgrade projects.

Maintenance & repairs

Council inspects all roads in the municipality every year and prioritises an annual schedule of maintenance works and repairs. Repair works include:

  • sealing
  • grading
  • patching
  • shoulder repairs
  • sign replacement
  • line marking
  • weeding
  • slashing
  • spraying
  • tree trimming

Signage

General maintenance of street signs and poles, speed restriction signs, black on white and black on yellow signs is the responsibility of Council.

VicRoads is responsible for white on green signage. Maintenance issues regarding these signs should be directed to VicRoads by calling 131 170. On State Highways including the Calder Highway (Fifteenth Street) and the Sturt Highway (Deakin Avenue), VicRoads is responsible for assessing and arranging additional signs

Street furniture

Street furniture includes things such as guard rails, bus stops and shelters, bicycle racks, tree guards, fences, rubbish bins, flag poles, drinking fountains, water fountains, retaining walls, memorials and public seating.
