Mildura Day Celebrations
Saturday, May 31, 2014
11:00 AM - 3:00 PM
This event is to celebrate 127 years since the signing of the Indenture with the Victorian Government which formalised Mildura as Australia's first irrigation colony. This has now become an annual event. This year we celebrate at Psyche Pumps and hosting a family day with the theme of the Chaffey Irrigation Plan which commenced at this site with the incredible George Chaffey designed Psyche Pumps which resulted in the district being transformed from an arid semi desert into a horticultural oasis. A range of activities are being planned, including a re-enactment of the exchanges between George Chaffey and Richard Tangye (company from Birmingham, England, who made the pumps, suggesting it would not work effectively), display of photographic and storylines of the past, historical items, period costume prizes and olden day food treats such as 'Little Normies', scones and cream and games of by gone era like the egg and spoon and sack races. Complimentary tours of the pumping station will be conducted, and there are many sites to walk around on a self guided tour where interpretative signage will provide greater information about their place in history. The pumps only operate four times a year, and this is a special treat to see them fully operational, enjoy the tours and surrounding atmosphere of Mildura Day celebrations.

Cinemas Project: Underfall
Friday, June 27, 2014
to Sunday, August 24, 2014

10:00 AM - 5:00 PM
The history and spaces of regional cinemas-around Victoria have inspired a major new statewide program of contemporary artworks curated by London-based curator and writer, Bridget Crone, who teaches at Goldsmiths, The University of London. The Cinemas Project is a program of major, new contemporary artworks that explore the spaces of cinema in regional Victoria. These projects, by five of Australia’s leading contemporary artists, evoke both the mechanics of film as well as the history and present day reality of cinema. They were places of social gathering but also of imagination and fantasy. Once important community hubs, particularly in regional towns where they often doubled as town halls or dance venues, movie theatres have long been evocative places filled with possibility. The Cinemas Project aims to explore and to reignite these sites of living memories, spirited visions, and future possibilities. Commissioned by NETS Victoria and supported by MADA through its international program, The Cinemas Project features works by five of Australia's leading contemporary artists. Installation and performance artist Mikala Dwyer is producing a new film-based work, Underfall, exploring the power of images to distort and disorientate, and referencing the architecture of cinema. Shot on location in Mildura, and featuring a soundtrack by local composer Kevin Sheehan, the work will be exhibited at the Mildura Arts Centre.

Mildura Country Music Festival
Friday, September 26, 2014
to Sunday, October 05, 2014
When Australian country music fans talk about the festival 'biggies' the Mildura Country Music Festival rates a mention alongside Tamworth Country Music Festival and the Gympie Music Muster as one of the big three. The major difference between the other two and the 28th annual Mildura Country Music Festival is Australia's biggest showcase of Independent entertainers. What that means is a seemingly unending cast of highly talented professional country music artists whho aren't signed to major record label deals. The Independent factor gives Mildura a very different complexion, and it's a successful formula that has worked admirably over the years. In 2014, more than 100 individual artists and groups will entertain over the 10-days and the roster comprises many award winners including the Golden Guitar finalists and Star Maker winners.

The Mildura Show traditionally is an agricultural show that has been taking place in Mildura for 66 years. It came about shortly after WWII when returned servicemen, local business men and farmers cam together to create a community event when locals could meet to showcase their businesses, farm equipment and animals. Today the Show has developed into a family event incorporating aspects of the above, along with various competitions to emphasise all talents, opportunities for local community groups to participate and festival entertainment for children and adults alike. Having become known as the third largest Show in Victoria after Melbourne and Geelong. It's a fun and fantastic Show with all the goodies you would expect, Showbags, scary rides, live entertainment and of course big fireworks.
